Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable incurable and man-made. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last best hope Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. The first portion of I Am Legend is extraordinary. Will Smith roaming a completely empty New York City is surprisingly riveting. The rather deliberate pacing of the film actually enhances the desolate feel. The film builds tension wonderfully by leaving the threat unseen and only gradually even explaining the threat. Unfortunately, when the mutants are finally revealed, they look like they belong in a video game which almost completely destroys the reality that the film had worked so hard to create. The film also fails to build on a suggested subtext concerning the mutants' motivations (although it apparently is revisited in an alternate ending included on the two-disc DVD release). This leads to a disappointing final portion of the film. Will Smith does a good job of carrying the film with only his canine costar to share the screen. The first two-thirds of the film are riveting enough to make I Am Legend worth watching, although the final third keeps it from being a classic.
