The cinematographer was Caleb Deschanel (whose wife played Anne Howard's
mother). The cinematographer works with the director on staging camera shots,
dealing with lighting and coloring, or as is the case with several of the
scenes in The Patriot, wide shots of vistas and battlefields. Such scenes
as the huge battles and the skirmish on the Martin's farm were difficult to
shoot and/or light. Cinematography basically brings that art that you and
Andrea have mentioned to life.
