Comments about Caleb Deschanel
Caleb Deschanel does not have an extensive filmography, but he does have one of quality and is considered one of the best living cinematographers. He has been nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar four times for The Right Stuff, The Natural, Fly Away Home and now The Patriot, but he has not yet won the award. Interestingly, Fly Away Home was co-written by Robert Rodat.

Deschanel's work on The Patriot is beautiful. The cinematography is clear and crisp. There were no problems of peering into shadows to see characters except when appropriate in night scenes. It is nice to watch a film that is done like the old technicolor films and feels like it was painted, rather than the grainy and jerky style that seems to be popular in Hollywood films nowadays.

Trivia: Caleb Deschanel's wife, Mary Jo, auditioned for the part of Anne Howard's mother. It was only after she won the part that Director Roland Emmerich learned that Mary Jo was his cinematographer's wife.
