Government of Greece
Statement on Allowing the US and NATO to Use Its Airspace
September 25, 2001
The Greek Government has allowed use of its airspace and provided landing rights
for U.S. military aircraft over the last few days.
The Government spokesman in Athens, Mr. Dimitris Reppas, during his briefing
yesterday said that it is self evident that Greece will authorize the use of
resources that will contribute to the success of the task at hand, i.e., the
fight against international terrorism. He added that Greece will honor its obligations
as a member of NATO and the European Union because the national interests of
the country and the defense of justice, freedom and human rights dictate this.
The fight against terrorism is a fight for democracy, he concluded.
