1997 was a good year for quality science fiction films. Not just one, but two such films came out that year. One was Contact, while Gattaca was the other. Gattaca is set in a sanitized world where genetics determine everyone's fate from jobs to mates, or does it? Is life all predetermined by genetics and science? Or does it still come down to the human spirit and will in the end? Vincent, a genetically deficient Invalid, sets out to live up to his surname and be a Free Man by becoming an astronaut, but not without help from all those who like to see an underdog overachieve.
