The Return of the King was done by the same filmmakers who produced the animated The Hobbit. They produced this film for television to complete the story that had been started in the Ralph Bakshi produced The Lord of the Rings, which actually only covered the first part of the trilogy. This film helps bring closure and form a complete cycle of animated adaptations of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and its prequel, The Hobbit. The voice cast for the roles of Bilbo/Frodo, Gandalf and Gollum were the same actors who had voiced Rankin and Bass' The Hobbit rather than those from Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings. However, Paul Frees did return as the voice of Elron.
