Bio
Orlando Bloom was born in Canterbury, England on January 13, 1977. He is said to be named after the hero in Virginia Wolfe's novel. His father, Harry, an anti-apartheid activist, died when he was four. His mother raised he and his older sister. In 1993, at age sixteen, he moved to London to act with the National Youth Theatre. Two years later he received a scholarship to study at British American Drama Academy.

After leaving the Academy, Orlando Bloom was cast in a bit part in Wilde in 1997. The role would earn him many offers, but he declined them in order to attend the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1998, he fell from a third story window and was told that he might never walk again. He had surgery and walked out of the hospital two week later. In 1999, he was cast by Peter Jackson in The Lord of the Rings trilogy as Legolas, after having auditioned for the role of Faramir.

On the heels of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Orlando landed a supporting role in Ridley Scott's Blackhawk Down. He then had a supporting role in Ned Kelly, which chronicled the famous Australian outlaw. Orlando next landed a starring role opposite Johnny Depp in The Pirates of the Carribean, which turned into another blockbuster. Orlando then starred in a couple of Mediterranean "sword and sandal" epics in Troy as Paris and Kingdom of Heaven, which is another Ridley Scott film.
