Anne McCaffrey

Dragonflight

After having a friend rave about the Pern series to me for a couple of years, I finally read the opening book in the series. Well, to be honest, I read Dragonflight because it was required for an English class. The first thirty or so pages were extremely difficult to get through because there is little introductory exposition to the world of Pern. After that initial troublesome segment, the book turns into a good read which I enjoyed.

McCaffrey does a wonderful job of creating an interesting world populated with Dragons, which were bred by the people of Pern for defensive purposes. My one gripe is that I would have preferred a bit more foreshadowing for the eventually ending of the book, but that is a minor issue and just my opinion. I plan on continuing to read the series, because there is much to the interesting world of Pern that is only hinted at or left unexplored in this first book that I wish to return to and learn about.
