James Fenimore Cooper's The
Last of the Mohicans has been adapted to the big screen several
times, most recently in 1992. It is a popular choice because of its favorable
tone toward the 'noble savage'. Cooper's prose is almost painfully descriptive
of the untouched native lands. While set during some historical events of the
French and Indian War in New York, the main character of Hawkeye was based on
Daniel Boone. The book was a good read once scanning past the political commentary
was undertaken.
