Kingdom of Heaven follows the adventures of Balian, from village blacksmith to knight to defender of Jerusalem. Balian discovers he is the son of a knight and offered to join in the defense of Jerusalem. At first, he declines, but eventually does go out of concern for his soul and that of his deceased wife's soul. His newly found father is wounded and knights Balian. Balian arrives in Jerusalem, is befriended by King Baldwin, becomes involved with the king's sister, Sibylla, and defender of Jerusalem against the besieging army of Saracen King Saladin.
