In The Fellowship of the Ring:
Barliman Butterbur is the innkeeper of the Prancing Pony in Bree. When Frodo inquires about Gandalf, Butterbur tells him that Gandalf has not been there for six months. Later, he hides as the Nazgûl enter the inn.
Note: The role of Barliman Butterbur is much greater in the Books. He is an acquaintance of Gandalf's, has a letter from Gandalf for Frodo and belatedly warns the Hobbits that Aragorn had been asking about them.
