Stanley Kubrick's 2001
is a marvel. Not only does the story hold up after thirty years, but so do his
special effects, which he kept to a minimum. Most science fiction movies this
old show their age when it comes to the special and visual effects, but not
2001. I will admit that compared to today's fast-paced, action-packed
movies, 2001 is slow, but since it has a plot, it afford to be
slow. The movie is timeless and I can't do it justice in words, just watch it
for yourself.
As a side note, if you really enjoyed the pace and style of 2001:
A Space Odyssey, you can try and watch Solaris
(VHS). Solaris is a Russian film (so you have to read subtitles),
which was made five years after 2001, but was based on a novel
that predates both movies. Solaris is very similar in cinematic
style and even less hurried than 2001 (had to warn you). Unlike
2001, Solaris has psychological antagonists and
is just as cryptic as 2001.
