The
Matrix blends a cyberpunkish theme of anti-establishmentism, cool
visual effects and great fight choreography into a great thrill ride. The
Matrix follows the 'coming of age' of Neo, a computer geek (of course),
who is recruited into the resistance by Morpheus. The film then rolls through
several action pieces and some cryptic philosophy before Neo is put on the spot
and must 'follow his destiny' or run from it.
Some of the 'deeper' elements of the story seem to be heavy-handed, while some
of the dialogue on the philosophy of living and life sounds like it came straight
out of fortune cookies. However, The
Matrix is touted to be the first film of a trilogy, so it is possible
that the depth of the story remains to be completely revealed. It's a great
popcorn movie with the potential of developing the science fiction story elements
in the next two movies, but any message about what makes one human is drown
out in the action-packed climax.
