The Big Bang Theory tells the story of two roommates, Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons), two brilliant physicists with the kind of "beautiful minds" that understand how the universe works, but have no clue when it comes to social interaction with the opposite sex. All this begins to change when a free-spirited beauty named Penny (Kaley Cuoco) moves in next door. Sheldon is quite content spending his nights playing board games with their socially dysfunctional friends and fellow scientists. Leonard, however, sees a whole new universe of possibilities in Penny; one of them being true love. Will this be a match made in TV heaven? The Big Bang Theory is executive produced by Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men) and Bill Prady (Gilmore Girls) and stars two TV kids who are all grown up - Johnny Galecki, who played Darlene's boyfriend on Roseanne, and Kaley Cuoco, who played John Ritter's daughter on 8 Simple Rules. For Dating My Teenage Daughter."
The Big Bang Theory was one of the very few surviving newcomers of the 2007-2008 season. The premise of a pair of nerds having an attractive female move in nearby is one that wouldn't appear to have legs. However, just as How I Met Your Mother used that premise simply as a starting point, The Big Bang Theory uses the introduction of Penny simply as a starting point. From there, the show puts the three "nerds:" Leonard, Howard and Rajesh in new social situations. We exclude Sheldon since he comes off as more neurotic than just socially stunted. Along the way, the show throws off a lot of "technobabble" and references to science fiction that few would seemingly understand. Nevertheless, the show survived nearly a full season (only being cut short by the writers' strike) and was renewed for a second. Being the science fiction fans that we are, we found the show surprisingly funny even as it found new material that did not involve Leonard's pursuit of Penny.
