The Monkees was a show to promote a made-up band. It was goofy, silly and a live-action cartoon that suppsedly followed the various adventures of the band when it wasn't recording or touring.

Looking to cash in on Beatlesmania, music producers cast two actors and two musicians as The Monkees. The TV series promoted their records (a 'music video' in each episode) and tour. The Monkees were popular for a short time and have managed to live on for years thanks to their continued notoriety.
