Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is the epic sequel to the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl. Johnny Depp earned an Academy Award nomination for his role as the rogue pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Best Actor Nominee, 2005), and he’s back for more incredible adventure. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is a grand, swashbuckling, high-octane joy ride filled with rousing action, devilish pirate humor, monstrous sea creatures and more.

In the first “Pirates” film Captain Jack saved the day, but now he finds he has a debt to pay: he made a bargain for his soul with Davy Jones himself, the ghostly, fearsome ruler of the ocean depths. It looks like a one-way trip to Davy Jones’s locker, but the crafty Captain Jack won’t go down without a fight. Dashing Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and beautiful Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) once again get caught up in Jack’s adventures across the Seven Seas. Escaping hostile natives on an exotic island and fighting the mighty Kraken are just some of the thrilling escapades Jack faces, because nothing will stop him from finding the fabled Dead Man’s Chest and winning his freedom.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest IMDB Listing

PatriotResource.com Review:
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is the blockbuster sequel to 2004's Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. This film is thirty minutes longer and yet ougrossed its predecessor. Also different is that this film has a cliffhanger ending that leads into the third film, which was filmed at the same time just as The Matrix sequels were. Dead Man's Chest brings back almost all of the first film's main characters, while upping the ante over the first film. Captain Jack was not really in any jeopardy, only Will and Elizabeth were.

In this second film, Captain Jack Sparrow is mortal and has Davy Jones and his Kraken after him and the Black Pearl. Jack counters by going after Davy Jones' heart. Meanwhile, Will and Elizabeth's marriage is postponed by death warrants that are used by Lord Beckett as leverage to get Will and Elizabeth help him secure the heart so the East India Company can control the sea. In addition to Davy Jones and the Kraken, the film throws in cannibals, a Voodoo-like priestess, a huge pirate bar brawl and not one but two roving sword fights. One fight involves Pintel, Regetti and Elizabeth sharing two swords and the other is a three-way between Jack, Will and Norrington, which takes on a new dimension when Elizabeth's own affections seem divided. Top it off with Jack's disappearance and a tease that he and the Black Pearl can be found.

The story itself seems to get lost at times in those set pieces. Those set pieces mirror the Disney attraction itself in that it's all about pirates, but not necessarily one story. Like the ride, the film never stops being entertaining and always has enough going on that repeat viewings will bring new findings. While lacking direction at times, the film's action pieces and special effects more than make up for it and make this film a great popcorn movie.

The DVD:
Both the single disc and two-disc editions include audio commentary and bloopers. The two-disc edition has another three hours of special features. The special features are full of information on the development of the sequels, a lengthy documentary on the filming including a brush with a hurricane, an interactive feature that breaks down Jack Sparrow's constume, features on fight coordination and the special effects of Davy Jones and the Kraken. Unlike many features found on DVDs, the Pirates of the Caribbean features are surprisingly informative.
