This is the oldest movie science fiction movie that I have enjoyed (I have seen Metropolis, but that was a chore). At a time when science fiction movies were nearly all B-movies, this film had a deeper quality. Even in black and white, it was excellent. Instead of invading aliens, this visiting alien is peaceful. Nonetheless, humanity feels threatened nonetheless simply because someone else is more powerful than we are and thus must be an enemy.

Another reason that this movie stands the test of time so well is that it has few special effects and instead relies on storytelling. It has many of the elements of science fiction movies that are now considered clichés, but were still fresh at the time this movie was made.
