Forbidden Planet is an update on William Shakespeare's The Tempest. It has cheesy effects and cheesy dialog, but still is a classic. It even has the latter day king of parody movies, Leslie Nielsen (still young here), trying to bring seriousness to his role and be the hunky heroic male love interest and captain (an early influence for Captain Kirk?). The film takes a classic theme and tries to move it into the science fiction genre. It also has the first appearance of Robby the Robot (of Lost in Space fame). It's one of those movies that you have to see once.
