Among the supporting cast, René Auberjonois was one of the most familiar faces in the movie. He is well known from his roles in three television series: Clayton Endicott III on Benson, Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Paul Lewiston on Boston Legal. He is further recognizable to people thanks to his role as Father Mulcahy in the original theatrical version of M*A*S*H. Auberjonois also has done an increasing amount of voice work since the 1980's.

In The Patriot
Reverend Oliver has a scene or two where he takes a prominent role in the story. The Reverend is also used for some humor thanks in part to Auberjonois' rather unique face. Reverend Oliver stands at Gabriel's side even to the end. He basically has the speaking role that represents the farmers and their more idealistic, noble and mostly inexperienced view of the true harshness of war. The character of Reverend Oliver also reminds the audience of the importance of Christianity to many of the colonists.
