Reverend Oliver Reverend Oliver

Portrayed by: René Auberjonois

Reverend Oliver is from the village of Pembroke. He first voices concerns for peace and prayer in response to Gabriel Martin's plea for militia volunteers to join the war. However, after Anne Howard's impassioned speech about patriotism moves men of the town to volunteer, he foregoes his frock to also join them.

Reverend Oliver represents the younger patriots' deeply-religious idealist and naive view of the war. He, like Gabriel, never knew the harshness of the French and Indian War. He voices the 'civilized' colonial idea that war is dignified and honorable. He presides over Gabriel and Anne's wedding. Following Colonel William Tavington's raid on Pembroke, Reverend Oliver joins Gabriel's pursuit and stays by Gabriel's side until his own end.
