Aftermath
The British soon withdrew from the area and Lt.
General Sir Henry Clinton sailed back to New York City. The British
would not make another serious assault in the South until 1778 and would not
attack Charleston again until May
1780. Meanwhile, Fort Sullivan would be renamed Fort Moultrie in honor
of Colonel
William Moultrie. In September, Maj.
General Charles Lee would be recalled to help General
George Washington with his campaign.
