President Heydar Aliyev
Reaction to the Terrorist Attacks
September 11, 2001

Azerbaijan’s President Heydar Aliyev sent his heartfelt condolences to the U.S. President George W. Bush following the murderous acts of terrorism in the United States.

“I was profoundly saddened by the news about numerous human casualties and destruction caused by the ghastly acts of terror in New York and Washington, DC,” said President Aliyev in his letter. “I present my deepest condolences on this tragedy to you, families and dear ones of the victims, and to all the friendly American people.”

President Aliyev also chaired an emergency meeting of the country’s Security Council. The Security Council unanimously condemned the terrorist acts committed on the territory of the United States and stressed the need to further strengthen the struggle against international terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

In accordance with the Security Council instructions, appropriate measures have been taken in order to secure Azerbaijan’s vital infrastructure installations, including the country’s transportation system. President Aliyev told U.S. Ambassador in Baku, Ross Wilson, that special efforts are made to provide security for all foreign missions.

On this tragic day, the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Washington, DC joins our American friends and colleagues in mourning the innocent victims of these horrible acts.
