President Vicente Fox Quesada
Statement to the Media on the Terrorist Attacks
Los Pinos, Mexico
September 11, 2001
@12:00 P.M. EDT
Good afternoon.
To all Mexican people:
This morning we were notified about the horrible news of the series of terrorist
attacks in the United States, that have left a great trail of destruction.
Mexico expresses its condolences to the Government and the American people for
the irreparable human losses.
We also express our energetic condemnation to these attacks.
I have informed President George Bush of our feelings of sorrow and our solidarity
in such difficult moments.
As an expression of grief, the Mexican Government has informed its Diplomatic
Delegations and their consular representations in that country to suspend the
celebrations of our Independence Holidays.
My Government will pay attention to the development of the events. Mexico is
united, in calm and working.
I have given instructions to all our diplomatic representations to reinforce
efforts to immediately provide our fellow countrymen in the United States, all
the support they need.
We have taken all the required measures. The Order and Respect Cabinet is working
permanently, to guarantee the normal development of our activities.
We have taken precautionary measures, similar to those being taken in other
countries, to guarantee the suitable functioning of the financial market and
banking. They will reestablish their operations, once the conditions allow them
to.
We repeat our most energetic condemnation to all kind of violence, and we hope
that peace reigns the world.
I urge the Mexican people to stay together, in calm and to act with peace of
mind.
