Webisode 3 Recap:
On the Raptor, Finnegan reports that they are only at 68% of ship-normal O2. Esrin points out at that level that there can be memory loss, irrational behavior, depression and dizziness. Finnegan response is that being dizzy is better than being dead.

Brooks points out that they've got a mechanic onboard and offers to try to fix the scrubbers. He moves toward the back.

Gaeta moves out of the way and his hand reaches near civilian Eight's head.

Pilot Eight takes notice of this and doesn't look pleased.

Brooks opens up his tool box and pulls out a tool.

Civilian Eight looks over.

Pilot Eight looks on.

Brooks gets down, opens the access panel and starts digging around. He pulls out a different tool and reaches further into the panel.

Gaeta looks around and then leans closer to civilian Eight. He softens a big and says, "you're her." Civilian Eight responds with a bit of a smile.

Flashback #1:
In a tent, Gaeta unfolds a paper as civilian Eight looks on.

Flashback #1 Con't:
(Caption: 15 Months Ago; Cylon Occupied New Caprica )
There's a shot of the Cylon-occupied New Caprica settlement from the air.

Flashback #1 Con't:
The paper has a list of names. Gaeta folds the paper back and returns it to civilian Eight. They both hold the paper for a moment before he lets go. She tucks it inside her jacket and leaves the tent. Gaeta watches her leave with a look of concern on his face.

Back on the Raptor, Brooks is having trouble reaching the loose connection.

Pilot Eight offers to try.

Brooks grunts as he continues to struggle.

Pilot Eight says she'll try and stands up.

Brooks hands her the pliers and gets out of the way.

As Pilot Eight starts to reach into the access panel, Esrin says that messing around with the scrubbers is only going to make things worse.

Pilot Eight looks inside the access panel and then move so she can reach further as Brooks asks her if she can see it. She says that she can. She struggles to reach it as well.

Gaeta watches Pilot Eight as civilian Eight first looks at him and then at Pilot Eight working.

Pilot Eight says she's got it.

A shower of sparks then comes from the access panel. After a second shower of sparks starts, Esrin kicks Pilot Eight in the shoulder to knock her away from the panel. Pilot Eight hits the floor and lays there lifeless.

Gaeta leans over and finds no pulse. He says that she's dead.

Brooks says that he was just doing what she was doing.

Civilian Eight suggests that they check the pliers.

Gaeta picks up the pliers and finds that the insulated grip has been stripped off of the handle of the pliers. He asks, "Who did this?"

No one answers.

Analysis:
  • Fifteen months before on New Caprica, Civilian Eight was one of Gaeta's sources of information since she apparently showed him the list of people to be rounded up and executed.
  • It appears that someone intended to kill the mechanic Brooks or at least prevent him from repairing the scrubbers by removing the insulated grip. At best, such a move would have made repairs far more difficult to render without the safety of the insulation against electrocution. At worst, someone would get killed. This also raises the possibility that the FTL jump might have been sabotaged.
  • Based on her reactions to the interactions of Civilian Eight and Gaeta, Pilot Eight appears to have knowledge of their clandestine relationship on New Caprica. As previously established, she could have gained that knowledge if Civilian Eight had to be downloaded and resurrected.

Backstory:
  • Fifteen months before, Civilian Eight had not only known Gaeta on New Caprica, but had passed information to him.

Notes:
  • Running time: ~ 2:30
  • According to Jane Espenson's podcast commentary, webisodes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9 and 10 did not change much during rewrites. However, webisodes 4, 5 and 6 underwent "many, many, many" rewrites even up until production.
  • According to Jane Espenson's podcast commentary, the script originally had a Six and an Eight. Then, they thought they would have two Sixes, but Tricia Helfer was unavailable so it became two Eights because Grace Park was available.
  • According to Jane Espenson's podcast commentary, the original script had the remaining survivors being Gaeta, Six and Eight and one webisode (8?) had Gaeta asleep while the Six and Eight discussed the murders that they had committed.
  • According to Jane Espenson's podcast commentary, the original script had less of a horror movie film, was more cerebral and slower paced.

Unanswered Questions:
  • Were Pilot Eight and other Cylons now aware that civilian Eight had passed information to Gaeta back on New Caprica?
  • With the deliberate stripping of the pliers' grip, could the FTL jump been sabotaged as well?
  • Why didn't either Brooks or Pilot Eight notice that the pliers' grip was gone?
