Aragorn In The Fellowship of the Ring:
When Frodo and the Hobbits arrive at Bree, Strider is a mysterious stranger who quietly watches Frodo. After Frodo's disappearing act, he grabs Frodo and brings him upstairs. He tells Frodo that he knows what burden he carries. Sam, Merry and Pippin burst in, attempting to rescue Frodo. The hobbits stay with Strider as the Nazgûl enter their room that night and attempt to kill them.

Though Sam isn't sure if they should trust Strider, Frodo feels that they have little choice but to allow him to lead them to Rivendell. He leads them cross-country using his Ranger knowledge of old paths and ways. At Weathertop, Frodo is attacked by the Nazgûl and stabbed with a Morgul Blade by the Witchking. Strider drives the Nazgûl off and then searches for Athelas to treat Frodo's wound to slow the poison. Strider is surprised by Arwen, who then takes Frodo on to Rivendell just ahead of the Nazgûl.

At Rivendell, Strider watches Boromir take up Narsil at the Shrine. Arwen, who is the daughter of the elf-lord Elrond, then comes to him and speaks of his heritage, which Strider is hesitant to embrance, because of the failure of his ancestor. Arwen encourages him and tells him that she has chosen to bond with him and forsake immortal life for him. Later, at the Council of Elrond, Legolas reveals to all at the council who did not know that Strider is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, heir of Isildur and heir to the throne of Gondor. This surprises Boromir, who is the son of Denethor II, Steward of Gondor. After Frodo volunteers to take the Ring to Mt. Doom in Mordor, Aragorn pledges his service to Frodo.

Aragorn defers to Gandalf when the Fellowship sets out from Rivendell. Aragorn and Boromir fight off the Watcher in the Water in the lake outside the Mines of Moria. After Gandalf falls with the Balrog at the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, Aragorn leads the Fellowship to Lothlórien, the home of Galadriel. After a restful stay there, the eight remaining members of the Fellowship follow Aragorn south to Amon Hen. Once there, a debate arises over where to go. Boromir wants to continue on to Minas Tirith in Gondor, while Aragorn wants to start heading straight for Mordor.

As the Fellowship takes a few minutes to consider what to do, Saruman's Uruk-hai attack and capture Merry and Pippin. Aragorn encounters Frodo during the attack and learns that Frodo means to go on without the rest of the Fellowship. He again pledges his loyalty and lets Frodo go. Boromir is mortally wounded during the fighting, but pledges his allegiance to Aragorn before he dies. After seeing to sending Boromir's body on one final journey down the Great River, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas set off after the Uruk-hai to rescue Merry and Pippin.
