The Lord of the Rings Middle Earth Places: Amon Hen

Amon Hen

Amon Hen:
- Appears in The Fellowship of the Ring

Amon Hen was an ancient lookout on the western side of the Great River. The Fellowship stops there to finally decide whether to head south to Gondor as Boromir suggests or head across to the eastern side of the Great River and head directly for Mordor by way of Emyn Muil as Aragorn suggests. Frodo, who is struggling with the decision, asks for an hour in private to decide and leaves the rest of the Fellowship by the shore.

However, Boromir soon seeks out Frodo. The Ring's corruption of Boromir caused him to try and take the Ring from Frodo. Frodo escapes from Boromir only by putting the Ring on. As Frodo flees, he then encounters Aragorn who again shows his allegiance to Frodo by turning down the temptation of the Ring. He then buys time for Frodo to escape when Lurtz and the Uruk-hai attack. Boromir, who as soon as the lure of the Ring passes is remorseful, then tries to protect Merry and Pippin, but is mortally wounded by Lurtz. He apologizes to Aragorn and then pledges his allegiance to him as his king just before he dies.
