The Lord of the Rings Middle Earth Places: Tower of Cirith Ungol
Tower of Cirith Ungol:
- Appears in The Return of the King
Cirith Ungol Tower guards the Pass of Cirith Ungol. It was built after the Battle of Dagorlad as a Gondorian watchtower, but fell to Sauron as his power returned. The pass is located above Minas Morgul. It is far more accessible than Black Gate and Minas Morgul as an entrance to Mordor. In recent years, the garrison there has not been as vigilant because Shelob lurks near the pass, making the way dangerous for those trying to get into Mordor and those trying to get out. Gollum learned of the pass and Shelob when he was skulking around Mordor.
A patrol of Orcs came from the Tower of Cirith Ungol and found Frodo's bundled body. He was taken back to the Tower where the two groups of Orcs ended up killing each other off in a fight sparked by arguing over Frodo's Mithril Coat. Sam snuck into the tower just in time to kill Gorbag and save Frodo. Frodo and Sam then used Orc armor and gear to disguise themselves.
