Captain Lee Adama in Season One:
Captain Lee Adama is Commander William Adama's son. He first arrives on the Galactica only because he was assigned to it as part of the ship's retirement ceremony. He has little interest in speaking with his father, who he still holds responsible for the death of his brother, Zak. Lee believes that Zak only became a pilot because his father expected him to and Lee still hasn't forgiven his father. Lee then leaves, escorting the liner carrying Secretary of Education Laura Roslin. While they are returning to Caprica, the Cylons attack. Using Commander Adama's old Viper which is unaffected by the Cylon jamming, Lee protects the liner from two Cylon Raiders. Roslin then gets word that she is the highest survivor in the line of succession and thus now President.

President Laura Roslin then decides to launch rescue operations and begins gathering survivors together. In the meantime, Commander Adama has taken command of the military being the highest survivor in the chain of command. He issues orders for all surviving ships to rendezvous with the Galactica. Roslin countermands him, ordering him to assist her in rescue operations. Lee finds himself caught squarely in the middle of their power struggle. Before their argument is resolved, Cylon Raiders close in on Roslin's ship. Lee triggers an EMP, which appears to be a thermonuclear blast. Lee's father thinks he's dead. Roslin finishes her operation and begins leading her fleet away. The Cylons attack again and she is forced to order an FTL jump, which leaves some ships behind.

At Ragnar Anchorage, Lee is reunited with his father and is soon the Galactica's new CAG. Lieutenant Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace, who had been Zak's flight instruction and fiancé, admits to Lee that Zak had actually failed basic flight. Lee keeps this to himself. Lee then accepts the role of military advisor to the President, which puts him at odds with his father. During a mission to the prison ship, Astral Queen, Lee shows his principles by giving his word to Tom Zarek that there will be free elections, which does not sit well with either President Roslin or his father. President Roslin then tells him about her advanced cancer.

When a hanger deck accident on the Galactica forces the recruitment of new Viper pilots, Lee and Lieutenant Thrace butt heads when she washes them all out on the first day. He indirectly hints at Starbuck's guilt over Zak's death in a conversation with his father which makes his father suspicious. When Starbuck goes missing, they both take her rescue too personally and put the entire fleet in jeopardy until President Roslin snaps them both back. Because Starbuck is still unable to fly because of her knee injury, Lee leads a mission to take out a Cylon mining base. The successful mission seems to bring he and his father closer together.

Lee and Lieutenant Thrace handle security for a meeting of the Quorum of Twelve. He also seems to seriously question some of Tom Zarek's motives. When President Roslin convinces Starbuck to disobey orders and fly the captures Cylon Raider back to Caprica to retrieve the Arrow of Apollo, Commander Adama orders Lee and Colonel Tigh to arrest her. During the ensuing standoff on Colonial One, Lee turns his gun on Colonel Tigh believing that they have no authority to arrest the President. President Roslin then backs down and both she and Lee are placed under guard. Lee is in CIC when Lieutenant Sharon 'Boomer' Valerii shoots his father.
