The Forbidden Pool is located outside of Faramir's hideout in Ithilien. When Gollum is spied fishing in the pool, Faramir informs Frodo that fishing in the pool brings the penalty of death. Frodo at first denies that he knows Gollum, but then Faramir points out archers who have Gollum in their sights. Frodo admits that Gollum has been serving as his guide and agrees to lure Gollum out. After Frodo does so, Faramir's men capture him and then mistreat him. It is because of this betrayal by Frodo that Gollum decides to lead Frodo and Sam to Shelob.
