The Lord of the Rings Middle Earth Places: Paths of the Dead
Paths of the Dead:
- Appears in The Return of the King
- Located near Dunharrow near the border of Gondor and Rohan
While the Rohirrim gather at Dunharrow in preparation for riding to Gondor's aid, Elrond comes to Aragorn. He gives him Narsil, which has been reforged as Anduril. He tells Aragorn that it is time for him to fulfill his heritage and make the journey through the Paths of the Dead. As he prepares to leave, Gimli and Legolas insist on joining him.
The three enter the Paths of the Dead. They reach the City of the Dead and are surrounded by the Dead. Aragorn confronts the King of the Dead, who attacks Aragorn. Aragorn fiends off the attack with Narsil, which convinces the King of the Dead that he is facing the heir to Isildur, the King of Gondor who cursed them to unrest for breaking his oath to Elendil. Aragorn convinces the King of the Dead to finally fulfill his oath and he'll release them to rest.
