The Lord of the Rings Middle Earth Places: The White Tree

White Tree

White Tree:
- Appears in The Return of the King
- Found in the courtyard of the The Citadel on the seventh (and highest) level of Minas Tirith in Gondor

The White Tree was planted by Isildur from seeds brought from Númenor. The tree has long since died, but its dead trunk remains as a symbol of a land whose glory has long passed.

It is Pippin's glimpse of the White Tree in Sauron's mind that clues Gandalf in to Sauron's intentions of attacking Gondor. After Faramir's ill-fated counterattack on Osgiliath, he is brought to the courtyard and laid near the tree. Denethor immediately despairs and orders Faramir brought to the Tombs of the Stewards. Pippin however realizes that Faramir is still alive and tries to convince Denethor that he's still alive and needs medical attention.
