Frodo Baggins In The Fellowship of the Ring:
Frodo welcomes Gandalf, who is an old friend of Bilbo's. Bilbo is having birthday party to celebrate turning eleventy-one (111). Following the birthday party, Gandalf tells Frodo that Bilbo has left and he has inherited Bag End and a gold ring. Gandalf advises Frodo not to use it and to keep it a secret. Gandalf returns and after testing the ring, tells Frodo that it is the One Ring, forged by Sauron in the fires of Mt. Doom in Mordor. He advises Frodo to leave The Shire. Gandalf tells Frodo to make for the Prancing Pony Inn in Bree where he will meet him. Frodo's gardener, Samwise Gamgee, overhears them, so Gandalf orders him to go with Frodo.

When Frodo sets out, he decides to stay off the roads for safety. As they are making their way through Farmer Maggot's Fields, they literally run into Merry and Pippin. After a couple of close encounters with the Black Riders, Merry and Pippin decide to go with Frodo and Sam and Merry leads them to the Buckleberry Ferry. In Bree, Frodo draws attention to himself by putting on the Ring and disappearing. He is then contacted by Strider. Even though Sam does not trust Strider, Frodo feels that they have no choice but let him lead them to Rivendell.

At Weathertop, five Black Riders, the Nazgûl, attack and Frodo is stabbed with a poisoned Morgul Blade by the Witch-King. Arwen soon arrives and, outriding the Nazgûl down the East Road, carries him to Rivendell. Frodo awakens to find Gandalf and Elrond tending to him. He also finds that Bilbo is at Rivendell. Elrond calls a council which includes Elves, Dwarves and Men to discuss the Ring. Legolas reveals that Strider is Aragorn, heir of Isildur and the throne of Gondor. Frodo, who had thought his mission was over, volunteers to take the Ring to Mt. Doom, which is the only place that it can be destroyed. Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli the dwarf, Legolas the elf, Gandalf and his three hobbit friends agree to go along as the Fellowship.

After Saruman prevents them from crossing the Pass of Caradhras, Frodo chooses to go through the mines of Moria. Just outside Moria, Frodo is almost taken by The Watcher in the Water in the lake, but Aragorn and Boromir rescue him. After a battle with a Cave Troll and other close calls, he and the Fellowship make it to the Bridge of Khazad-dûm where Gandalf falls while battling a Balrog.

Aragorn then leads them to Lothlórien, where Galadriel warns Frodo that Boromir will try and take the Ring and that the Ring will corrupt each member of the Fellowship. She also tells him that if he fails, The Shire will be destroyed. At the Fellowship's parting, she gives him a phial of the light of Eärendil. At Amon Hen, Boromir catches Frodo alone and does try and take the Ring. Frodo escapes from Boromir and decides to leave the Fellowship behind. As he is attempting to leave, Sam comes along and insists on joining him. Frodo reluctantly agrees and they begin their journey through Emyn Muil.
