Gandalf comes to Hobbiton for Bilbo's birthday. He then leaves and goes to Minas Tirith to check on Bilbo's ring. Gandalf returns to and tests the ring, confirming that it is the One Ring of Power. He then tells Frodo to leave as soon as possible with Sam. He then leaves for Isengard to consult with Saruman. Saruman imprisons him on top of the Tower of Orthanc, but he escapes and goes to Rivendell. He attends the Council of Elrond and offers his services to Frodo. He leads the Fellowship to the Pass of Caradhras, but they are driven back. Frodo chooses the route through Moria. After some trouble, Gandalf opens the Hollin Gate into Moria and later confronts the Balrog at the Bridge of Khazad-dûm where he falls.
